I know what you are thinking. ‘I thought this blog was written by a nutritionist. Aren’t the recipes supposed to be healthy?’ Well, believe it or not, this 3-ingredient chocolate banana milk really is healthy. When I think of chocolate milk, I think of vast quantities of added sugar. But it doesn’t have to be that way. While this chocolate banana milk tastes like a creamy milkshake, it is only sweetened with bananas. And the chocolate flavor is nothing but a dash of cocoa powder.
You are probably ready to dismiss this recipe as something reserved for the kiddos. But if you are anything like me, there are times when your taste buds cry out for something sweet. I usually try to satisfy my sweet cravings with fruit, but sometimes that doesn’t cut it. That is when I reach for a glass of this chocolate banana milk. Because it is made with frozen bananas, the consistency is like a milkshake, so you can fool your tastebuds into thinking you are drinking a decadent sweet treat. And while it does have a fair amount of sugar, it is all natural sugar from the banana and milk (as long as any plant milk you use is unsweetened). Plus, it comes packaged with 3 grams of fiber, which helps to keep you feeling full and slows down the movement of sugar into your blood stream. And if you are feeling really crazy, you can throw in a shot of cold brew coffee to spice things up. What healthy treats do you use to satisfy your sweet cravings?
- 1 cup sliced frozen banana (or 1.5 medium fresh bananas, sliced)
- 1 cup milk*
- 1 tbsp cocoa powder
- *You can use any type of unsweetened milk (oat, almond, hemp, soy, dairy), but if you use a thinner plant milk like almond milk, you might need to use less cocoa.
- Put all the ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.
- Serve and enjoy.
Thanks for this great recipe. So simple and healthy. Hard to believe how yummy it is, the kids love it. I made one slight change as well which is another nice option. Just add some vanilla and a tablespoon of peanut butter for a slightly peanut buttery taste.
HI Shan, thanks for the great suggestions. I’ll give them a try! Esther
I used Low Fat Chocolate milk and frozen bananas with a splash of vanilla extract and a few kinds of other fruits like strawberries or cherries.
